Holding Tank Treatment

Liquid or solid chemicals added to the black water tank after dumping to break down waste, suppress odor, and prevent sensor crusting.

Also called: tank treatment, RV holding tank chemical, black tank treatment, Happy Camper, Aqua-Kem

Holding tank treatment is liquid or solid chemicals added to the black water tank after dumping to break down waste, suppress odor, and prevent sensor crusting. Standard procedure on every dump.

What treatment does

Three jobs:

  1. Break down solids so they dump cleanly without leaving residue
  2. Suppress odor during the time between dumps (especially important in summer heat)
  3. Keep tank sensors clean so they read accurate fill levels

Without treatment, you get false “full” sensor readings, persistent odor, and “pyramid” buildup of solid waste inside the tank.

Brand notes

The reliable categories:

  • Bio-enzyme treatments (Happy Camper, Camco TST) — most popular, neutral smell, effective
  • Chemical treatments (Aqua-Kem) — older formula, formaldehyde-based, harsh smell
  • Single-use packets (TidyMan, Camco RV Toilet Tissue) — convenient, no measuring

Cost: $0.50 to $2.00 per treatment dose.

How often to add

  • After every dump — primary timing
  • Weekly during long trips — if you’re going more than 5-7 days between dumps
  • Before storage — leaves the tank in good condition for next trip

What rental companies provide

Most rental companies include a starter pack of tank treatment in the rental kit. Some charge a separate fee ($25-50) for the kit; others bundle it.

Confirm at pickup. If the rental doesn’t include it, buy a bottle at any RV store or Walmart — $8-15.

Don’t use

  • Bleach — kills the bio-enzymes that break down solids
  • Drain cleaners — damage the tank materials
  • Household toilet treatments — different formulation, not designed for the tank size

Use RV-specific holding tank treatment only.
