RV Toilet

A water-flush toilet that empties to the black water tank. Most modern RVs use Dometic or Thetford porcelain or plastic models.

Also called: RV toilet, marine toilet, Dometic toilet, Thetford toilet

An RV toilet is a water-flush toilet that empties to the black water tank. Most modern RVs use Dometic or Thetford brand toilets — either porcelain (premium) or plastic (most common).

How RV toilets differ from house toilets

  • No tank above. RV toilets flush by foot pedal or hand button. Water sprays into the bowl from a ring, then waste drops into the tank below.
  • Tiny water footprint. A typical RV flush uses 0.5-1 gallon vs. 1.6-2.5 gallons for a house toilet. This matters because both freshwater and black tank capacity is finite.
  • Direct drop to the black tank. No P-trap, no plumbing between the toilet and tank. The blade valve (foot pedal) is the only barrier.

Flushing rules

  • Use RV-rated toilet paper or 1-ply that dissolves quickly. Anything thicker stays solid in the black tank and clogs the gate valve.
  • Don’t put anything except waste and TP in the toilet. Wipes (even “flushable” wipes), food, and feminine products all cause clogs.
  • Use the partial water assist — a quick spray, then the foot pedal. Adds water to dilute solids and help them break down.
  • Add tank treatment after every dump or weekly during long trips.

When the blade valve fails

The blade valve (the foot-pedal-operated flap between toilet and tank) can fail in two ways:

  1. Won’t open fully — solid waste can’t drop. Leads to clogs.
  2. Won’t close fully — sewer odor backs into the bathroom.

Both are reasons to swap rigs at pickup or contact the rental company.

What “low-water flush” means

A low-water-flush button uses less water per flush, conserving freshwater for off-grid trips. Most modern RV toilets have both a normal and a “water-saver” setting. Use the smaller setting during boondocking trips.

If your rental has a cassette toilet

Some smaller Class B and pop-up campers have a cassette toilet instead — a removable waste container. Different procedure.
