Zion is the most visited US national park west of the Mississippi (4.7 million visitors per year). It has a famous tunnel-clearance restriction that makes RV class choice more consequential than at any other NP. Plan around the tunnel first; everything else is secondary.

The Zion tunnel rule

The Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel was built in 1930. It’s 1.1 miles long, narrow, and has clearance restrictions:

  • Vehicles over 11 ft 4 in tall OR over 7 ft 10 in wide OR over 50 ft long require a $15 traffic-control escort.
  • Escort hours: typically 8 AM to 6 PM in season; restricted in winter.
  • The escort pauses oncoming traffic so the oversized vehicle can drive down the center.
  • The fee covers two passes (in and out within 7 days).

What this affects: essentially every Class A motorhome and most Class C rentals.

Rental classTypical height/widthNeeds escort?
Class B camper van9-10 ft tall, 7 ft wideNo
Compact Class C (under 25 ft)10-11 ft tall, 7’8” wideUsually no, but verify
Standard Class C (25-30 ft)11-11’6” tall, 7’10” wideYes
Class A (any)11’6”-12’6” tall, 8’6” wideYes

For renters who want to skip the escort, a Class B or compact Class C is the right choice for Zion trips.

Trip duration math

  • 2-3 days: Zion Canyon main features — Angels Landing day, The Narrows day, Emerald Pools
  • 4-5 days: add Kolob Canyons section (different entrance, less-visited)
  • 5-7 days: Zion plus Bryce Canyon extension
  • 10-14 days: Utah Mighty 5 circuit (Zion + Bryce + Capitol Reef + Arches + Canyonlands)

Zion-specific considerations

  • Shuttle system mandatory April through October. You cannot drive into Zion Canyon during shuttle season; park at the campground, ride the shuttle. This is good news for RV trips — no driving stress through the canyon.
  • Springdale gateway town is walkable to the park entrance and has hotels, restaurants, and grocery stores.
  • Angels Landing permit lottery required since 2022. Lottery 2-7 days out or seasonal advance lottery.
  • Heat is significant May-September. The Watchman campground is in the canyon and runs 90-100°F afternoons. AC matters.
  • Flash flood risk in slot canyons (The Narrows, Subway). Watch weather forecasts religiously.
  • Bicycle rentals at Springdale are common; useful for shuttle-stop touring.
  • Tunnel escort hours vary seasonally; check NPS site within a week of your trip.
  • No big-rig overnight parking at Visitor Center for tunnel-escorted vehicles. Plan to park at your campground for the night.
