Yosemite is the third most-visited US national park and has the strictest RV length restrictions of any major Western NP. Multiple campgrounds cap at 24-27 ft. Rental class choice and reservation timing matter more here than almost anywhere.

Where to rent for Yosemite

Three launch cities serve the Yosemite rental market:

  • Fresno — primary launch via Highway 41 (south entrance). Major airport (FAT). 95 miles to Yosemite Valley. Strong peer-to-peer and corporate fleet.
  • Modesto — alternate via Highway 120 (Big Oak Flat / west entrance). Closer to Mariposa Grove and the Tioga Pass crossover to the high country.
  • Mariposa — closest town to the park but limited rental fleet. Better as a campground/hotel base than a rental pickup point.

For first-time renters, Fresno is the easier launch — major airport, broad fleet, established rental infrastructure.

Class recommendations for Yosemite

Trip typeRecommended class
Valley campground stayClass C under 35 ft motorhome, or travel trailer under 24 ft
Tuolumne Meadows high-countryClass C under 35 ft, or Class B
Mariposa Grove / WawonaClass C under 35 ft
Tamarack Flat / Yosemite CreekClass B only - max 24 ft
First-time rentersClass C 25-28 ft

Class A motorhomes over 35 ft do not fit major Yosemite campgrounds. If you want a Class A, you need to stay at private parks outside the park entrance and day-trip into Yosemite.

Trip duration math

  • 3 days: Valley only — Yosemite Falls, Half Dome viewpoints, Vernal Falls hike, Tunnel View
  • 5-7 days: Valley plus Glacier Point, Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias, and one high-country day via Tioga Pass
  • 7-10 days: add Tuolumne Meadows extended stay, Tenaya Lake, and a Hetch Hetchy day trip

Yosemite-specific considerations

  • Reservation pressure is extreme. Recreation.gov campground booking opens 5 months in advance at 7:00 AM Pacific. Popular Valley dates fill in 2-3 minutes.
  • Tioga Pass road (Highway 120 through the high country) closes annually for snow — typically November through May/June. Plan around it.
  • Valley shuttle system means you don’t need to drive within Yosemite Valley. Park the rig at your campground, ride the shuttle. Reduces driving stress significantly.
  • Bear safety. All food must go in the campground’s bear box, not in the RV. Bear-proof food management is enforced.
  • Mariposa Grove access requires a shuttle from Wawona (private vehicles often restricted in summer). Plan extra time.
  • Sustained grades. Highway 41 from Fresno climbs from 300 ft to 4,500 ft. Highway 120 from Modesto crosses Pioneer Pass. Plan for slow climbing in gas-powered RVs.
  • Smoke season (August-September) sometimes affects visibility. Watch for fire-related closures.
