RV Rentals for Rocky Mountain National Park — Trail Ridge Road and the Length Math
- State
- Colorado
- Max RV length
- 40 ft at Moraine Park; 30 ft at most others

Rocky Mountain National Park is Colorado’s flagship park and the seventh most-visited NP in the system (4.3 million annual visitors). It’s also one of the most accessible — 90 minutes from Denver airport. Rates run $165 to $245 per night before fees. Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved road in any US national park, is the centerpiece — but only open mid-May through early October.
Where to rent for Rocky Mountain
- Denver, CO — primary launch. 75 mi to Estes Park (east entrance). Major airport (DEN). Broadest rental selection.
- Fort Collins, CO — 50 mi to Estes Park via Big Thompson Canyon. Smaller airport but valid alternative.
- Boulder, CO — 40 mi to Estes Park. Limited rental fleet but exists.
- Grand Lake, CO — west entrance gateway. Smaller rental fleet.
For most renters, Denver is the right launch. Trail Ridge Road conditions and Estes Park infrastructure are well-served from DEN.
Length restrictions by campground
| Campground | Max RV length | Hookups | Reservation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Moraine Park | 40 ft motorhomes / 35 ft trailers | None | Recreation.gov, 6 months |
| Glacier Basin | 30 ft (closed for renovation through 2026) | None | Recreation.gov |
| Aspenglen | 30 ft | None | Recreation.gov |
| Timber Creek (west side) | 30 ft | None | Recreation.gov |
| Longs Peak | Tent only | None | First-come, first-served |
No campground in Rocky Mountain NP has hookups. This is true boondocking inside the park. Estes Park and Grand Lake have private RV parks with hookups just outside the park.

Trail Ridge Road
The road climbs from 8,000 ft (Estes Park) to 12,183 ft (the highest paved road in any US NP) and crosses to the west side at 11,200 ft Milner Pass.
- Open mid-May through mid-October depending on snow conditions. Confirm before planning.
- No length restriction on the road itself but rental capability at altitude matters.
- Gas-powered RVs lose power dramatically — 3% per 1,000 ft of elevation. At 12,000 ft, a 6.8L V10 produces 36% less power.
- Sustained climbs and descents for 11 miles each way. Brake-management discipline matters.
- Weather changes fast at the top — afternoon thunderstorms common. Plan for morning crossings.
Trip duration math
- 3-4 days: Bear Lake area, Trail Ridge Road, Moraine Park
- 5-7 days: add Wild Basin, Longs Peak base hike, west-side Timber Creek experience
- 7-10 days: add Indian Peaks Wilderness adjacent, multi-day backcountry section
Rocky Mountain-specific considerations
- Altitude sickness real above 9,000 ft. Take it easy on day 1. Hydrate. Avoid alcohol.
- Timed entry permits required mid-May through mid-October for park entrance during peak hours (9 AM-2 PM typically). Separate from campground reservations.
- Bear Lake parking fills by 8 AM in summer. Use park shuttle from park-and-ride.
- Lightning at altitude is dangerous. Off the trail by noon on alpine days.
- Elk rutting September-October draws crowds. Spectacular but reservation pressure intensifies.
- Snow possible any month above 11,000 ft.
- Sustained grades — Trail Ridge eastbound descent from Rainbow Curve to Estes Park works brakes hard. Use engine braking.
- Wildlife on roads — moose, elk, bighorn sheep. Dawn/dusk strike risk.
- Hail and afternoon thunderstorms July-August. Full-coverage insurance matters.
Typical Rocky Mountain trip cost (5 days from Denver, Class C)

| Fuel (400 mi @ 7 mpg loaded at altitude @ $3.80/gal) | $217 |
| Campground fees (NPS $30-36/night) | $150-$180 |
| Timed entry permit | $2 |
| NP entrance fee (free with annual pass; $30 without) | $0-$30 |
