Peak season is October through May; summer is brutal heat.

Where to rent for Joshua Tree

  • Los Angeles — 135 mi to Joshua Tree west entrance. Major airport and broadest rental selection.
  • San Diego — 135 mi to Joshua Tree south entrance. Strong rental market.
  • Palm Springs / Indio — 45 mi to park. Closest but limited rental fleet. Better for hotel stays with day trips.

For most renters, LA or San Diego is the right launch. Both offer better rental selection than Palm Springs.

Trip duration math

  • 2-3 days: central park loop, Keys View, Skull Rock, Hidden Valley nature trail
  • 4-5 days: add Cholla Cactus Garden, Wonderland of Rocks, Cap Rock, climbing or scrambling
  • 5-7 days: add Black Rock area, Lost Horse Mine trail, more remote sections

Joshua Tree doesn’t reward extended trips the way Yellowstone or Yosemite do. 3-5 days hits the major experiences.

Joshua Tree-specific considerations

  • Reservation pressure has intensified. As of 2024, 8 of 9 campgrounds require reservations on Recreation.gov, 6 months out. Used to be largely first-come; not anymore.
  • Water management. Only Black Rock and Cottonwood have water. For all other campgrounds, fill your fresh tank before entering the park, bring extra in jugs.
  • Heat is dangerous in summer. June-September daytime can hit 110°F+. Most rental AC can’t keep up at those temperatures. Avoid summer trips.
  • Cold nights even in spring/fall. Winter nights routinely hit 30s°F. Heat capacity matters more than AC in shoulder seasons.
  • Wind events common — high desert wind can affect awning use and outdoor cooking.
  • Dark skies — Joshua Tree is an International Dark Sky Park. Bring binoculars or a star app. Light pollution restrictions enforced.
  • Sand and dust — desert environment degrades air filters. Verify pickup condition.
  • Cellular coverage limited in most of the park. Plan for offline maps.
  • Rock climbing is a major draw. If that’s your focus, Hidden Valley campground is the right base.
