RV Rentals for Glacier National Park — Going-to-the-Sun Road Restrictions
- State
- Montana
- Max RV length
- 21 ft on Going-to-the-Sun Road; 35-40 ft at most campgrounds
- Nearest rental city
- Kalispell (28 mi to west entrance), Whitefish (30 mi), Missoula (140 mi)
- Typical rate
- $175-$255/night
Glacier National Park has the most famous scenic drive in the NPS system — Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR) — and the strictest RV size restriction on any park road in the country. Plan your rental around the road restriction or accept that you can’t drive the iconic route.
The Going-to-the-Sun Road restriction
GTSR connects the west and east entrances over Logan Pass at 6,646 ft. It’s a 50-mile scenic drive considered one of the greatest in North America.
Vehicle restrictions (enforced by rangers):
- Maximum length: 21 ft
- Maximum width: 8 ft (including mirrors)
- Maximum height: 10 ft
These restrictions apply to the section between Avalanche Creek and Sun Point — about 25 miles of the 50-mile road. The lower sections (west of Avalanche Creek, east of Sun Point) accept larger vehicles.
What fits:
- Standard SUVs and cars
- Class B camper vans at the smaller end
- Compact pickup trucks
- Some truck campers
What doesn’t fit:
- Any Class C motorhome (typically 25-32 ft and over 10 ft tall)
- Any Class A motorhome
- Any travel trailer or fifth wheel
- Most pickup trucks with bed campers due to height
The strategy for most renters: rent a Class C, camp at park campgrounds, and shuttle or rent a car/SUV for GTSR specifically. The free NPS shuttle covers most of GTSR in season.
Where to rent for Glacier
- Kalispell, MT — primary launch via west entrance. Closest major town (28 mi). Major airport (FCA).
- Whitefish, MT — alternate, 30 mi from west entrance. Smaller fleet.
- Missoula, MT — 140 mi away but stronger rental market.
Cruise America and Outdoorsy both have Montana presence. Selection is thinner than larger states.
Length restrictions by campground

Class recommendations for Glacier
| Trip type | Recommended class |
|---|---|
| Want to drive GTSR yourself | Class B under 21 ft |
| Park at campground + use shuttle for GTSR | Class C 25-32 ft |
| Family stay at Apgar with day-trip cars | Class C 28-32 ft + rented car |
| Many Glacier valley specifically | Class C under 35 ft |
| Two Medicine quieter alternative | Class C under 35 ft |
Trip duration math
- 3-4 days: west side only — Apgar, Lake McDonald, partial GTSR via shuttle
- 5-7 days: west and east via GTSR transit (with appropriate vehicle) plus Many Glacier
- 7-10 days: add Two Medicine, full backcountry approach options
- 10-14 days: Glacier plus Waterton Lakes (Canadian side) — passport required
Glacier-specific considerations
- GTSR is fully open mid-June through mid-September only. Snow closures extend the closed season at higher elevations. Confirm road status before travel.
- Reservation system is unusual. Most campgrounds use Recreation.gov with 6-month booking windows. Many Glacier and Two Medicine have specific opening dates.
- Vehicle reservations required during peak season (May 26-September 10 typically) for entering at West Entrance during 6 AM-3 PM. Separate from campground reservations.
- Grizzly bear country. Bear safety education and equipment matter more here than at most NPs. Bear spray, food storage protocols, no hiking solo at dawn/dusk.
- Weather extremes. Snow possible any month. Even July nights can drop to 35-40°F. Pack for cold.
- Cellular coverage extremely limited. No coverage at Many Glacier, very limited at Apgar.
- Fuel limited inside park. Fill up in Kalispell or West Glacier before entry.
- Canadian border crossing for Waterton extension requires passport and vehicle insurance valid in Canada (verify with rental).
Typical Glacier trip cost (7 days from Kalispell, Class C)
| Line item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Class C rental: $215/night × 7 nights | $1,505 |
| Rental fees + insurance + cleaning | $450-$600 |
| Fuel (600 mi @ 7 mpg @ $3.80/gal) | $326 |
| Campground fees (NPS $23-30/night) | $160-$210 |
| Vehicle reservation (if needed) | $2 |
| NP entrance fee (free with annual pass; $35 without) | $0-$35 |
| GTSR car rental for 2 days (if you’re in a too-big RV) | $200-$400 |
| All-in 7-day trip | $2,443-$3,078 |
