Trip duration math

  • 2 days: Scenic Drive + Hickman Bridge hike + Fruita orchard visit
  • 3–4 days: add Capitol Gorge + Grand Wash + petroglyph viewpoint
  • 5–7 days: add Cathedral Valley loop (4WD road) + Sulphur Creek hike

Capitol Reef-specific considerations

  • Historic orchards. Fruita has working apple, pear, peach, and apricot orchards. Pick-your-own is allowed in season (typically June–October).
  • Quietness. Of the Mighty 5, Capitol Reef gets the fewest visitors. Better solitude than Zion or Arches.
  • Cathedral Valley road is unpaved washboard — requires good clearance and dry conditions. Don’t take rentals on it after rain.
  • Cell coverage very limited.
  • Heat in summer. Lower elevation than Bryce. Summer highs can hit 100°F.
  • Cold winters. Visitor center may close in winter; check status.
  • Petroglyph viewing is best in mid-day when shadow contrast peaks.
  • Sulphur Creek hike requires wading; check water temperature.
