Capitol Reef-specific considerations
- Historic orchards. Fruita has working apple, pear, peach, and apricot orchards. Pick-your-own is allowed in season (typically June–October).
- Quietness. Of the Mighty 5, Capitol Reef gets the fewest visitors. Better solitude than Zion or Arches.
- Cathedral Valley road is unpaved washboard — requires good clearance and dry conditions. Don’t take rentals on it after rain.
- Cell coverage very limited.
- Heat in summer. Lower elevation than Bryce. Summer highs can hit 100°F.
- Cold winters. Visitor center may close in winter; check status.
- Petroglyph viewing is best in mid-day when shadow contrast peaks.
- Sulphur Creek hike requires wading; check water temperature.
Typical Capitol Reef rental costs (3-day Class C, part of Mighty 5 circuit)
| Line item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Class C rental: $185/night × 3 nights | $555 |
| Rental fees + insurance + cleaning (prorated) | $200-$280 |
| Fuel from Bryce (~200 mi at 8 mpg @ $3.75) | $94 |
| Campground fees (Fruita $25/night) | $75 |
| All-in 3-day Capitol Reef segment | $924-$1,004 |
Capitol Reef adds about $1,000 to a Mighty 5 circuit trip.
