Where to rent for Canyonlands
Same as Arches:
- Moab, UT — gateway town. Best for combined Arches + Canyonlands Island in the Sky trips.
- Monticello, UT — gateway for the Needles district. Smaller rental market.
- Salt Lake City — primary launch for broader Utah trips.
The three districts
Island in the Sky (most accessible)
- 30 mi from Moab via UT-313
- Scenic overlooks accessible by RV
- No campground inside this district (use Moab-area private parks)
- Day-use only; iconic Mesa Arch sunrise viewpoint here
The Needles
- 50 mi from Moab via US-191 and UT-211
- Squaw Flat Campground accommodates RVs up to 28 ft
- Longer driving and hiking opportunities
- More remote feel than Island in the Sky
The Maze (not for RVs)
- 4WD-only roads with substantial technical sections
- No RV access possible
- Backcountry only

- Same heat considerations as Arches. Summer brutal.
- Cellular coverage extremely limited. Plan offline maps.
- No fuel inside the park. Fill up in Moab or Monticello.
- Roads to Needles are remote — confirm spare tire condition.
- Dead Horse Point isn’t part of Canyonlands NP but is the iconic overlook just outside. Pay the small fee and visit.
- River rafting access from Moab is the famous Colorado River adventure.
- Star gazing world-class — designated International Dark Sky Park.
- Confluence overlook (Colorado and Green Rivers meeting) is in the Needles and requires a meaningful hike.
