Walkthrough

The pickup-day demonstration where the rental staff or owner explains every system in the RV. Quality varies dramatically between rental companies.

Also called: walkthrough, pickup walkthrough, RV orientation, rental orientation

A walkthrough is the pickup-day demonstration where the rental staff or owner explains every system in the RV. Quality varies dramatically between rental companies and individual operators — the right walkthrough is the difference between a successful first rental and a frustrating one.

Walkthrough quality by rental type

Rental typeTypical walkthrough
Budget corporate chain (Cruise America)15-20 minutes
Mid-tier corporate (El Monte)20-30 minutes
Luxury corporate (Road Bear)30-40 minutes
Franchise model (Fireside RV Rental)45-60 minutes
Peer-to-peer (Outdoorsy, RVshare)Varies wildly by owner

For first-time renters, walkthrough length is the single most important rental selection criterion.

What a good walkthrough covers

A complete walkthrough explains:

  1. Driving — mirror adjustment, blind spots, height awareness
  2. Pickup/dropoff procedure — gas tank requirements, dump station
  3. Electrical — shore power connection, generator operation, house battery
  4. Plumbing — fresh water fill, dump procedure, propane refill
  5. Appliances — fridge operation, water heater, AC, microwave, stove
  6. Slide-outs and leveling — how to deploy and retract
  7. Awning — operation and wind rules
  8. Safety — fire extinguisher location, propane detector, smoke/CO detector
  9. Emergency contacts — roadside assistance, owner direct number
  10. Provided kit — what’s included (bedding, kitchen, outdoor)

Questions to ask if not covered

  • What do I do if the generator won’t start?
  • Where are the closest dump stations on my route?
  • What if I can’t get the slide-out to retract?
  • How do I switch the fridge between propane and electric?
  • What’s the procedure if I get a flat tire?
  • Can you walk me through pre-trip and return checklists?

Take notes during the walkthrough

Most people forget half of what they hear. Take notes — phone notes work fine. Photograph any specific instructions (gas tank type, battery cutoff switch location, etc.).

Take photos for the condition report

Walk around the rig with the staff member and photograph every existing scratch, dent, or interior wear. This is your documentation if the rental company tries to charge you for pre-existing damage.

Red flags during walkthrough

  • Rushed or perfunctory. Indicates the company doesn’t prioritize first-time renters.
  • “Just figure it out as you go.” Walk away if you’re a first-time renter.
  • Won’t demonstrate slide-outs or generator. Equipment may be broken.
  • No condition report. Refuse to drive away without one.
