Pop-Up Camper

A folding camper trailer that packs down to a low-profile box for travel and opens at the campsite to reveal canvas-walled sleeping areas. The lightest towable RV format.

Also called: pop-up, pop-up camper, tent trailer, folding camper, tent camper

A pop-up camper is a folding camper trailer that packs down to a low-profile box for travel and opens at the campsite to reveal canvas-walled sleeping areas. Also called a tent trailer or folding camper.

The defining characteristic: most of the camper’s volume is created at the campsite, not while driving.

What pop-ups offer

  • Light weight. 1,500-3,500 lb dry weight. Towable behind most midsize SUVs and crossovers.
  • Low road profile. Packs down to under 5 ft tall. Reduces wind resistance and parking issues.
  • Lowest entry-cost RV format — rental rates start at $65/night.
  • Sleeps 4-8 people despite the small folded size.

What pop-ups don’t offer

  • Solid weather protection. Canvas walls leak and don’t insulate.
  • A real bathroom. Most have either a portable cassette toilet or nothing.
  • Indoor cooking comfort. Most pop-ups have an exterior propane stove.
  • Air conditioning that actually works. Canvas walls + AC = doesn’t keep up in heat.
