Damage Waiver
Optional rental insurance that reduces or eliminates renter financial responsibility for damage to the RV. Different from liability insurance.
Also called: damage waiver, collision damage waiver, CDW, physical damage waiver
A damage waiver is optional rental insurance that reduces or eliminates renter financial responsibility for damage to the RV itself. Different from liability insurance, which covers damage you cause to other people and their property.
Damage waiver tiers
Most rental companies offer 2-3 tiers:
| Tier | Typical coverage | Deductible | Daily cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Catastrophic only | $1,000-$2,500 | Included or $10-$15/day |
| Mid-tier | Most damage | $500-$1,000 | $20-$35/day |
| Premium / full-coverage | All damage | $0 | $30-$50/day |
What damage waivers cover
- Collision damage (you cause)
- Comprehensive (weather, theft, vandalism)
- Glass and windshield
- Roof and slide-out damage
- Tire and wheel damage (sometimes)
What damage waivers don’t cover
- Damage from prohibited activities (off-roading where not allowed, exceeding weight ratings)
- Damage during DUI
- Damage from gross negligence
- Interior cleaning beyond normal use
- Lost or stolen accessories (kitchen kit, bedding, etc.)
- Personal belongings inside the RV (separate coverage required)
How damage waivers interact with personal insurance
- Personal auto insurance typically doesn’t extend to RV rentals. Confirm with your insurer before relying on it.
- Credit card rental coverage usually excludes RVs. Most card benefits cover cars only.
- Renters/homeowners insurance may cover liability but not damage to the RV.
For most renters, buying the damage waiver is the right move. The exception is renters with documented RV rental coverage on personal or umbrella policies.
Practical recommendations
- Hail-prone regions (Colorado, Texas Panhandle, Kansas): full coverage strongly recommended
- Mountain trips: full coverage for animal strike and weather risk
- Hookup-only trips at established RV parks: mid-tier may be sufficient
- Multi-week trips: full coverage for cumulative risk
