Class B Camper Van

A camper-van conversion built on a standard van chassis. The smallest, most maneuverable motorhome class.

Also called: Class B, camper van, Class B van, van life rental, Sprinter van

A Class B camper van is a camper conversion built inside the body of a standard cargo van — most commonly a Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, or Ram Promaster. Lengths run 18–24 feet, sleep capacity 1–2 (occasionally 4 with a pop-top), and rental rates run $175–$300 per night as of 2026.

Class B is the fastest-growing rental category for three reasons:

  1. It drives like a tall van. No special skills needed. If you can drive a U-Haul, you can drive a Class B.
  2. It fits in regular parking spaces. National park campgrounds, urban street parking, normal driveways — none of which a Class A or large Class C can do.
  3. It’s better at boondocking. Solar panels, lithium house batteries, and efficient appliances are standard in 2020+ Class B builds, so you can run off-grid for several days without a hookup.

The trade-off is space. You’re sleeping in 1 to 2 beds, cooking on a 2-burner stove, and showering in a wet bath (or skipping the shower entirely on shorter trips).

If you’re traveling alone or as a couple, Class B is almost always the better choice. If you have kids, it usually isn’t.

Typical rental terms

  • Minimum age: 25 (some peer-to-peer owners accept 21)
  • Security deposit: $500–$1,500
  • Insurance/damage waiver: $20–$35/day
  • Mileage policy: 100–150 miles/day included on most platforms; unlimited at premium chains
  • Generator: Class B almost never has one. House battery + solar instead.

Where to rent a Class B

Class B is dominated by the peer-to-peer platforms. Outdoorsy and RVshare both have thousands of Class B listings from individual converters and small builders. The corporate chains carry few or no Class B options — Cruise America and El Monte skew almost entirely Class C. See the Class B rental hub for current options.
