Who actually rents RVs in the Coachella Valley?

The valley fleet is thin for a metro this famous. Our September 3, 2026 inventory pull returned 48 live Outdoorsy listings inside the Palm Springs radius, and the owners cluster where the driveways are: seven in Desert Hot Springs, five in Indio, four each in Palm Springs and Thousand Palms, with the balance commuting in from Murrieta, Menifee, and Temecula on the far side of the San Gorgonio Pass. Travel trailers dominate at 30 of 48. Class C motorhomes number 12, Class A coaches just three. That mix matters in April, because a trailer needs a tow vehicle rated for it, and most festival renters fly in.

Where should you take an RV from Palm Springs?

Joshua Tree for the headline trip, Lake Cahuilla for a first night with hookups, the Salton Sea and Anza-Borrego for empty desert, and the Palms to Pines highway only if your rig is short.

• Joshua Tree National Park (West Entrance about 40 miles, 50 min via CA-62; Cottonwood entrance about 60 miles via I-10 east). Black Rock, up by Yucca Valley, holds 99 sites at $35 with water and a dump and pads that take 40-footers. Cottonwood, at the south end, has 62 sites at $35 with the same services. Jumbo Rocks (124 sites, $30) is the scenic pick but dry. Book six months out on Recreation.gov.
• Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park (about 25 miles southeast, 58075 Jefferson Street, La Quinta). Riverside County's 93-site lake campground with 30- and 50-amp full and partial hookups, showers, a dump at the south end, and a 14-day limit. • Salton Sea State Recreation Area (about 45 miles southeast via CA-111). Empty shoreline sites, cheap, and 230 feet below sea level. Go for the birding and the strangeness in winter; the smell and the heat rule it out from May on.
• Anza-Borrego Desert State Park (about 90 miles via CA-86 and S22). Borrego Palm Canyon Campground takes trailers to 35 feet and books hard during the spring wildflower window. Fuel up in Indio; there is nothing between Salton City and Borrego Springs.
• Palms to Pines Scenic Byway, CA-74 to Idyllwild (about 55 miles, 1 hr 30 min). The climb out of Palm Desert stacks hairpins, blind corners, and unguarded drop-offs for a dozen miles. A Class B van or a short Class C is fine; a 35-foot coach or a trailer is a bad idea. Say so to the owner before you book.

What does the 2027 festival calendar do to prices?

Four events between February 11 and April 25 empty the valley fleet in sequence, and Coachella's two weekends are the hardest RV booking in Southern California.

The season stacks up like this. Modernism Week runs February 11-21, 2027, with tickets on sale November 1, 2026. The BNP Paribas Open fills Indian Wells February 28 through March 14. Coachella takes the Empire Polo Club in Indio April 9-11 and April 16-18, and Stagecoach follows April 23-25. Palm Springs RV Rental puts its book-by window at four to eight weeks for all of them. Between events, the valley still runs a snowbird premium from November through April. Encore's Palm Springs Oasis RV Resort in Cathedral City and Thousand Trails Palm Springs both treat November-April as peak, and the Thousand Trails park sells propane at $5 a gallon on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9:00 to 11:00, with a free dump for registered guests. Summer is the inverse: the cheapest rigs of the year, and a reason nobody wants them.

Where do you dump, fill propane, and fuel around Palm Springs?

Two I-10 truck stops bracket the valley: the Pilot at North Indian Canyon for propane and diesel, and the Love's at Dillon Road in Coachella for a dump.

The Pilot Travel Center at 6605 N. Indian Canyon Drive in North Palm Springs sits at the I-10 interchange and has diesel lanes, DEF, showers, and bulk propane. Thirty miles east, Love's Travel Stop #207 at I-10 and Dillon Road in Coachella lists RV dump service and propane, which makes it the natural last stop before a Joshua Tree run through the Cottonwood entrance or a return to a Coachella-side owner. Budget extra fuel: the valley's owners are spread across 40 miles, and a Class C at 8 to 10 miles per gallon eats a tank on a Joshua Tree loop.

What catches first-time renters out here?

Wind on the I-10 through the San Gorgonio Pass, heat from May to September, a 25-foot ceiling at half of Joshua Tree's campgrounds, and a city that won't let you park an RV on the street.

The wind farm is not decoration. The San Gorgonio Pass funnels wind between Mount San Jacinto and San Gorgonio Mountain, and Caltrans posts high-wind advisories for high-profile vehicles on that stretch of I-10 regularly. A 30-foot Class C or a travel trailer will wander in a crosswind, so slow down between Cabazon and Whitewater and keep both hands on the wheel. Heat is the second hazard: dash air conditioning on a long grade raises engine temperature, and a rooftop unit on a 30-amp pedestal loses the fight above 105 degrees. Third, measure before you book Joshua Tree. Hidden Valley, White Tank, and Indian Cove cap combined length at 25 feet, and a truck plus trailer blows through that fast. Finally, Palm Springs code bars RV parking in residential zones unless the rig is screened from the street, and the Convention Center lots prohibit overnight RVs, so a driveway night at a friend's place is a citation waiting to happen.
